A Jatiya Nagarik Party (NCP) leader was shot in his head on Monday in Khulna town.

The victim has been identified as Motaleb Shikdar, Khulna divisional chief of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and central organiser of NCP’s Jatiya Sramik Shakti.

He is the son of late Moslem Shikdar, a resident of Sheikhpara Palli Mangal School area in the area.

Motaleb was shot around 11:45 AM at Sonadanga area in the town, according to police and party sources.

NCP Joint Chief Organiser Dr Mahmuda Mitu confirmed the incident in a social media post, saying Shikdar was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. Doctors described his condition as alarming.

Sonadanga Police Station officer-in-charge Rafiqul Islam said the shooting occurred near the Sonadanga Surgical Clinic area. “He was rescued and taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital. An investigation is underway, and details will be shared later,” he said.

NCP Khulna district and metropolitan organiser Sajidul Islam Bappi said locals first rescued Shikdar and took him to the hospital.

Expressing frustration, he alleged that Khulna has increasingly turned into a hub of criminal activity, citing frequent gunfights and bodies being recovered from rivers in recent times.

He further accused the administration of inaction, claiming that arrested criminals often secure bail easily and return to violent activities.

He also alleged political patronage behind criminal groups, though no official response to the claims was available.

The incident comes shortly after the recent attack on Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, adding to growing concerns about targeted attacks on political figures across Bangladesh.
