A 10-bed Neonatal Special Care Unit (SCANU) has started operations at the 250-bed Pabna General Hospital, aiming to improve treatment facilities for critically ill newborns.

The unit, set up on the second floor of the hospital, was inaugurated on Saturday afternoon by Pediatrician Dr Nitish Kumar Kund and Pabna Press Club President Akhtaruzzaman Akhtar.

Among those present at the inauguration were Assistant Director of Pabna General Hospital Dr Rafiqul Hasan, Associate Professor of the Pediatric Department Dr Parimal Kumar Pal, President of Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) Pabna branch Dr Taslimul Arefin Ratan, President of Pabna Medical College Teachers’ Association and Orthopedic Surgeon Dr Masudur Rahman Prince, General Secretary of the Teachers’ Association Associate Professor Dr Sirajul Islam, Gynecologist Dr Sareba Sabera Sultana Asmani, Pediatrician Dr Jannatul Fourdous, and other physicians and officials.

Speaking at the event, Dr Rafiqul Hasan said the establishment of the SCANU was made possible with the cooperation of local doctors, including members of DAB. He expressed hope that the unit would significantly reduce neonatal mortality by ensuring proper treatment for critically ill newborns.

Dr Nitish Kumar Kund said the SCANU was a vital addition to the hospital, as it would provide specialized care for newborns suffering from post-birth jaundice, premature births, malnutrition, and low birth weight, enabling many infants to recover with timely and appropriate treatment.
