A man was shot dead and two others were injured in a clash between two rival factions of the local BNP in Mollakandi union of Munshiganj Sadar upazila early today.

The dead was identified as Arif Mir, 35, a resident of Chardumuria village and a BNP activist. One of the injured, Imran, Arif’s cousin, sustained bullet injuries and was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after initial treatment at Munshiganj General Hospital.

According to media reports, the violence broke out around 6 am following a long-running feud between Arif, an associate of former union BNP vice-president Awlad Hossain, and Shah Kamal, a follower of district BNP convening committee member Atik Mallik and current union BNP president Ohid Mollah.

The clash occurred just eight days after another BNP activist, Tuhin, was killed on November 2 in fighting between the same rival groups. Following that incident, members of the Kamal faction had fled the area but reportedly tried to return in the  morning, sparking renewed violence.

Hearing gunfire, locals rushed to the scene and took the injured to Munshiganj General Hospital, where doctors declared Arif dead on arrival.

Dr Ruhul Amin, a physician at the hospital’s emergency department, confirmed Arif’s death and said one of the injured had been referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment, while the other remains under care locally.

Officer-in-charge M Saiful Alam of Sadar Police Station said police arrived promptly and additional forces were deployed to restore order.

Tension remains high in the area following the latest outbreak of violence between the rival BNP factions.
