The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has launched a combing operation to arrest the assailants involved in the shooting of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the July Uprising–based platform Inqilab Manch and independent candidate for Dhaka-8 in the upcoming election.
On Friday, the DMP headquarters issued special instructions to all eight divisions, ordering the setup of road checkpoints and intensive searches. The DMP also said multiple detective branch (DB) teams are working in the field to apprehend the attackers.
DMP Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sajjat Ali told reporters that a combing operation is underway to catch those who opened fire on Osman Hadi. “Wherever the terrorists are hiding, they will be found and brought under the law,” he said.
He added that, alongside the police, detectives, RAB and other agencies are also working to arrest the culprits.
The DMP Commissioner said independent Dhaka-8 candidate Sharif Osman bin Hadi, who was shot by assailants, is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), and his condition is critical.
Motijheel Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Harun Or Rashid said preliminary information suggests that Osman Hadi and another man were travelling by rickshaw. When their rickshaw reached the Kalvert Road area, two men on a motorcycle approached and shot at Hadi before fleeing. “We have launched an operation to track down the attackers. Multiple teams are working,” he said.
Several officers of the Detective Branch said multiple teams have already started field operations to arrest the suspects. They are using advanced technology to expedite the arrest.
Earlier on Friday afternoon, armed assailants shot Sharif Osman Hadi in the Kalvert area of Bijoynagar in the capital. He was taken to DMCH at around 2:35pm.
Dr Moshtak Ahmed, the residential surgeon of DMCH’s emergency department, told reporters that Hadi’s condition is critical, with a bullet wound to the head.
Meanwhile, after the news of the shooting spread rapidly, July Uprising activists gathered in front of DMCH, demanding the arrest and maximum punishment of the attackers.
