Supporters of former minister and BNP chairperson’s adviser Lutfor Rahman Azad formed a 15km-long human chain in Tangail-3 (Ghatail) on Tuesday demanding that he be nominated with the paddy sheaf symbol for the upcoming national election.
The human chain began at Hamidpur Bazar in the afternoon and stretched to Deulabari bus stand.
Former acting president of upazila BNP Tofazzal Haque Sentu, former municipal BNP president Manjural Haque Manju, former general secretary Akham Rezaul Karim, municipal BNP former general secretary Faruk Hossain Dhala, former student leader Shamim Mia and others addressed the gathering.
Thousands of BNP activists and residents from surrounding villages took part.
Speakers said the BNP central committee nominated Obaidul Haque Nasir for the constituency, although he is not a resident of Ghatail.
They argued that former MP and minister Azad has long worked closely with local leaders and supporters but was overlooked for the nomination.
They demanded immediate cancellation of Nasir’s nomination and the nomination of Azad instead, warning of a tougher movement if their demand is ignored.
