The nomination of Tasnim Jara, an independent candidate for the Dhaka-9 constituency and a former leader of the National Citizen Party, has been declared invalid.

Returning Officer and Dhaka Deputy Commissioner Rezaul Karim made the announcement on Saturday.

Tasnim Jara said she would appeal the decision to the Election Commission (EC).

After the rejection, Jara told reporters that she had collected more than the required 1% of voter signatures to qualify for nomination. However, while verifying ten signatures, the Election Commission found issues with two, leading to the cancellation of her nomination.

She said that one of the two signatories knew they were a voter in Dhaka but had no way of knowing they were not a voter of the Dhaka-9 constituency.

Jara added that the other signatory, according to the copy of the national ID card submitted, was listed as a Dhaka-9 voter, but the Election Commission claimed otherwise.

She said the situation arose because the signatories believed they were voters of the Dhaka-9 constituency and signed accordingly, while the Election Commission did not provide any means for voters to verify their constituency information.

It may be noted that on Monday, Tasnim Jara submitted her nomination papers as an independent candidate for the Dhaka-9 constituency.
