A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking directives to form a committee to assess the quality of bearing pads used in the metro rail and all flyovers across the country.

The petition requests the formation of a committee to verify whether the bearing pads installed in these structures meet the required quality standards.

Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun filed the public interest litigation on Monday. He said that the petition may be heard later this week by a High Court bench led by Justice Fahmida Kader.

The writ names the Secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, among others, as respondents.

Around 12:15pm on Sunday, a bearing pad from the metro rail fell near the Bangladesh Agricultural Scientists’ Institute adjacent to Farmgate Metro Station, killing a young man named Abul Kalam, 36, on spot. A heavy metal object that fell from above while he was walking past the site.
